Explores the history of the city of Cordoba.
Explores the history of Cordoba.
Guided tour through its streets, be sourroded by the history. the atmosphere of the old Cordoba.
A suggest to you a walking tour that combine tourism and traditional taverns. I have seen many tourists who stay around the mosque, without knowing or wanting to walk through the streets of the Caliphal city .After the Mosque-Cathedral there is much to discover.
Squares of Córdoba, charming new route...We start from the Mosque to the Square of Pañuelo(Handkerchief), a few meters from the Santa Catalina gate . This square is the smallest in the world, you'll see why. From here we walk to Plaza del Potro, in this one we will stay a little longer, due this place is very rich in history. We need a break. We stop at the first tavern, to continue the walk to the Corredera Square. On the way to the square we will enjoy waching low houses, white facades that hide beautiful courtyards and streets of irregular floor .We find almost out of the blue with the Corredera square , a rectangular square where once were celebrated the first bullfights. Surely there is a terrace for a drink and tapas.
From here continuing to my favorite neighborhoods, San Andrés and San Lorenzo arriving at the Palacio de Viana. From here we take small and sloped streets to the Cuesta del Bailío, and Plaza del Cristo de los Faroles(Christ of lanterns) and from there still enjoying small streets, palaces, nice houses and geraniums we arrive to a Centennial tavern in downtown of Córdoba, where I book for you so that you can have lunch and taste the wines of Montilla-Moriles served here, wines of our land.

The house has an important collection of old posters of bullfights and Cordoba fairs. By their rooms have passed many celebrities who have left their signature on the barrels. The tour is free, recommending a break in the tavern restaurant where quality blends with the authentic. (Pisto and marinated fried fish are my favorites).
Rectangular and arched square, reminiscent of the Castilian cities, was an architect from Salamanca, the one who in 1683 began the construction of it. This space was used as a bullfight arena , games, markets, etc. Today the terraces and bars and taverns offer a nice place to stay without traffic, where all have their place. The Square is used for events as the Night of Flamenco, Medieval Market, concerts, etc. Close to the Corredera Square, leaving the Arco Alto we find on the street Tundidores one of my favorite traditional taverns, Taberna Salinas, the Rabo de Toro(ox tail) is one of the dishes we order when I go with my family.
Tour The San Lorenzo Quarter
Realejo and Alfaros .We can see the XVIII and the XIX century Córdoba. Narrow streets, very narrow, low houses with fences, patios, geraniums and small squares. The pleasure of walking, so authentic, so genuine , is unique. We don’t find tourism and we see a calm, quiet, and an intimate Córdoba. Bars with terraces or patios make us a more pleasant walk.
Walls Cairuhan and Victoria Gardens
Leaving the old town, at the end of the street La luna , will see the the Roman walls, later muslim and finally Christian . They are 360 mt. , that lead us to the Puerta de Almodovar. In this way we will pass by the sculpture that the city dedicates to the philosopher Seneca. From here we cross the Paseo de la Victoria Avenue and reach at one of the places in vogue of the city: Victory Gardens. Families with children, elderly people having a walk, the chestnuts sellers in winter, a handycraft market and recently with the Victoria Market,a food market, where various local gastronomic sellers use an old pavilion dating from XIX c.

Charming route aroud the Salud cemetery and The Courtyards (Patios).
Charming route aroud the cemetery, and the historical neighborhoods San Basilio.
It is curious that a cemetery is called Salud that means "Health", considering that those who are there have not a good health. The name of the cemetery is given by the Salud chapel that was built at the beginning of the XIX century. The idea arose during the French occupation when French wanted to end the practice that existed in the city and throughout Spain to bury the people in the churches and areas joined to them. The same Joseph Bonaparte signed the edict for the construction of this cemetery.
The route starts at the entrance to the cemetery, with a facade neoclassical faÇade style enclosure crowned with a triangular pediment with the Virgin with her son and Salus Informorum words, the patient's health. Cemetery route will take us through streets of cypresses between mausoleums and sculptures. Four “caliphs” of bullfighting are buried here, Manolete, Guerrita, Lagartijo and Machaquito. The mayor of Cordoba José Cruz Conde with other relevant people from Córdoba, are buried there. La Salud Cemetery, since 2010 is part of the European Cemeteries Route.
Finish the walk through the Campo Santo we will go to the traditional Barrio de San Basilio, through the Puerta de Sevilla. This neighborhood ,also known as Alcazar Viejo quarter, is where we can find the "Patios of Córdoba" will visit some of them, the Royal Stables, the Wall of the Alcazar. The Alcázar of the Christian Kings, Tower of Belen, Nuestra Señora de la Paz Church.
